New BA app offers mobile boarding passes

Available on iTunes from 19 July, the free BA2go app aims to make getting your flight information even easier

The BA2go app for the iPhone is free to download from iTunes.

Currently available for the iPhone, the free “BA2go” app from British Airways offers mobile boarding passes which can be scanned at check-in to passengers who are members of the BA Executive Club – a service which is free to join online.

The app is also free to download for passengers who are not members of the Executive Club who can access improved flight information, travel news, FAQs, a Twitter news feed and the ba.com mobile website all direct from their iPhone.

“Mobility and convenience is key for our customers” commented BA Head of Digital Marketing Chris Davies. “The Mobile Boarding Pass feature for Executive Club iPhone users will be especially welcome for those customers unable to print off their own boarding cards when returning from overseas”.

The mobile boarding pass functionality is being rolled out on both UK and international flights. A version of the app for Google Android and Blackberry devices will also be available in July 2010.

Tour de France sampling the summer sun in the mountains

The Tour gets back under way today after a rest on Monday with the biggest day in the Alps – a lung-busting 204.5km. The category-one climbs of Col de la Colombiere and Col des Saisies are mere hors d’oeuvres to the final climb of the day – the hors (toughest) category Col de la Madeleine.

It’s an energy-sapping 27km ride to the summit with a vertical climb of 1625m. But there is no summit finish, just a further 30km downhill section before riders can expect to have the finish line in their sights.

Early Season Visit to Verbier

Having just returned from a long weekend in Verbier I can categorically say that the resort is up and running and has a solid snow base to build another great season on. Although the recent snowfall has provided enough to ski on in most areas of the four valleys it has not been able to match the epic levels experienced at the beginning of last season. Consequently there are still some chalets available for the Christmas week. These chalets offer excellent levels of service and great value at substantially reduced prices (up to 40% off in some cases!!).

Pierre Avoi, (sleeps 12 +2), Verbier. 26,500 CHF (reduced from 46,500 CHF)

Amadouvier, (sleeps 10 +2), Verbier 19,200 (CHF reduced from 32000 CHF)

Plain food?

“British Airways will stop serving free food on thousands of short-haul flights as part of a £22m cost-cutting campaign.”

As the headline above states, there will be no meals or sandwiches served after 10am on flights lasting under two hours, hitting destinations such as Paris, Geneva and Berlin. This could mean a hungry start to one’s ski holiday. As ever Gordon Ramsay has come to the rescue, with his terminal five restaurant providing picnics for the journey. The picture below shows the special Christmas menu which is available from the beginning of December through to Christmas Day.

a

Starter: Scottish smoked salmon with dill potato salad

Main Course Sandwich: Roast turkey sandwich with cranberry and pear chutney

Dessert: Crumble topped mince pie with whipped vanilla cream

Priced at just £11.95, this is a fantastic option for those needing food on the move while keeping to the standard of catering seen in many of the luxury chalets at The Oxford Ski Company.

Focus on Val D’Isere

The king of classic, French, alpine resorts, Val d’Isere remains a firm favourite with both the British and French. Situated in the heart of the Espace Killy, Val d’Isère is the perfect place to explore the 300km of marked runs and the almost limitless off piste that the region offers. As the host of last season’s World Alpine championships it is not hard to see why Val d’Isère has a reputation as the place to go to prove one’s courage and ability.  However there is also plenty of skiing suitable for those less courageous among us with the Solaise side of the valley hosting a great area for those who like to cruise the blues and have a long lunch in the sunshine. With over 300km of marked runs, and unlimited off-piste skiing, Val d’Isère and its neighbouring resort of Tignes, makes it an ideal location for skiers and boarders of all abilities to find something which satisfies all. It also has a fantastic range of Luxury Chalets and Hotels to retreat to for some well deserved relaxation after a day on the mountains.

Open for its first full season the Avenue lodge Hotel on the main street of Val d’Isère is offering great value considering its enviable location, chic decor and excellent levels of service. Double bedrooms are available from €330- €450, per night, including breakfast.

Another key player in Val D’Isere, VIP are offering a new improved service know as its platinum collection, reflecting the burgeoning demand for high quality cuisine and service in the privacy of a chalet environment. Guests staying in Juniper, Mulberry or Birch Suites, on the top floor of the Aspen Lodge can experience a completely tailored holiday experience. They will work with their personal holiday advisor to create the holiday that they want, picking from a range of extras to include valet parking, airport lounge access and private transfer to resorts. Their personal chef will work with them prior to departure to design a bespoke dining experience. Tailored meals will be accompanied by fabulous wines, chosen by the award winning Master Sommelier.

From après ski until the end of the night, you will never get bored in Val d’Isère. Val d’Isere is renowned for its lively après ski scene and with around twenty different bars, there’s bound to be something to suit your tastes. There are over 60 restaurants where dishes range from the usual savoyard specialities, to fine haute cuisine. If you enjoy shopping then Val d’Isère has everything from haute couture and technical clothing to art galleries, and the village has much to entertain with an indoor swimming pool, English cinema, skidoo-ing, fitness centre, paparpenting, ice-climbing, ice rink, husky rides, ice-dving and snow-shoeing.
