Focus on Val D’Isere

The king of classic, French, alpine resorts, Val d’Isere remains a firm favourite with both the British and French. Situated in the heart of the Espace Killy, Val d’Isère is the perfect place to explore the 300km of marked runs and the almost limitless off piste that the region offers. As the host of last season’s World Alpine championships it is not hard to see why Val d’Isère has a reputation as the place to go to prove one’s courage and ability.  However there is also plenty of skiing suitable for those less courageous among us with the Solaise side of the valley hosting a great area for those who like to cruise the blues and have a long lunch in the sunshine. With over 300km of marked runs, and unlimited off-piste skiing, Val d’Isère and its neighbouring resort of Tignes, makes it an ideal location for skiers and boarders of all abilities to find something which satisfies all. It also has a fantastic range of Luxury Chalets and Hotels to retreat to for some well deserved relaxation after a day on the mountains.

Open for its first full season the Avenue lodge Hotel on the main street of Val d’Isère is offering great value considering its enviable location, chic decor and excellent levels of service. Double bedrooms are available from €330- €450, per night, including breakfast.

Another key player in Val D’Isere, VIP are offering a new improved service know as its platinum collection, reflecting the burgeoning demand for high quality cuisine and service in the privacy of a chalet environment. Guests staying in Juniper, Mulberry or Birch Suites, on the top floor of the Aspen Lodge can experience a completely tailored holiday experience. They will work with their personal holiday advisor to create the holiday that they want, picking from a range of extras to include valet parking, airport lounge access and private transfer to resorts. Their personal chef will work with them prior to departure to design a bespoke dining experience. Tailored meals will be accompanied by fabulous wines, chosen by the award winning Master Sommelier.

From après ski until the end of the night, you will never get bored in Val d’Isère. Val d’Isere is renowned for its lively après ski scene and with around twenty different bars, there’s bound to be something to suit your tastes. There are over 60 restaurants where dishes range from the usual savoyard specialities, to fine haute cuisine. If you enjoy shopping then Val d’Isère has everything from haute couture and technical clothing to art galleries, and the village has much to entertain with an indoor swimming pool, English cinema, skidoo-ing, fitness centre, paparpenting, ice-climbing, ice rink, husky rides, ice-dving and snow-shoeing.

Le Village – Alp d’Huez

adu

Built around an atmospheric courtyard, the five chalets of Le Village epitomise the most that skiing convenience has to offer along with exceptional design and space. Located in the Rond Points des Pistes area of Alpe d’Huez, the name is a true give-away as pistes pass Le Village on two sides and the chalets lie a mere stones throw away from access to the resort’s skiing. The start of your day’s skiing is truly a ski length’s away.

The five chalets vary in size, perfectly adapting to large parties of family and friends as well as more intimate groups. They all share the unrivalled piste-side location, incredibly generous room sizes and the ultimate in skiing convenience along with ubiquitous sauna and hot tub. Add to this the ultimate luxury a dedicated ski school, directly next to Le Village, private nanny service and superior chalet host standards and you have all the ingredients for the perfect holiday.

Known as the Ile de Soleil, Alpe d’Huez is famed for its sunshine making it one of the most perfect places to learn to ski. Come to think of it though, Alpe d’Huez caters for every level of skier and boarder with a large skiing area to rival the best. Nestled in a natural bowl, pistes stretch from the resort as far as the eye can see.

One of the oldest ski resorts in France, Alpe d’Huez is a melting pot of architectural style, its diversity somehow perfectly at home with the majesty of the natural surroundings. An easy resort to find your way around, the main street is home to a selection of shops, restaurants and bars as well as the one of the resort’s two swimming pools and the skating rink. Snowline’s Le Village is at the top of the resort, right next to the pistes but you are only a five to ten minute walk of the main centre depending upon where you want to go to.

At the bottom of the resort, about a 12 minute walk away from Le Village is the resort’s fantastic cinema and sports complex. Over 30 sports are housed inside, including climbing wall, gym, squash, tennis and a second swimming pool. Many of them are also completely free with a ski pass. There are frequent film showings in English for those that would like to venture outside, though with your own flat screen TV, complete with surround sound and comfortable sofas, most people would probably prefer the comfort of their own personal screening.

You are immediatley struck by the friendliness of the resort, the locals are extremely proud of where they live and genuinely want you to share their love of Alpe d’Huez. With such a warm and laid-back atmosphere, coupled with great skiing and a multitude of off snow activities, it’s hard not to agree with them.
