The winter season has already started in Zermatt!

The snow has already arrived in Zermatt and the seasons skiing is well under way. The resort has already opened quite a few of their slopes for people seeking an early pre-Christmas break.

Up to now, 117 kilometres of pistes have been open in the resort. Namely in the Matterhorn glacier paradise area: Trockener Steg (2939 m) to the Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn, 3883 m), equal to 900 height metres. The pistes also extend as far as Plan Maison (2561 m) and Valtournenche (1524 m) in Italy. Last weekend, Zermatt also added the snowsport region on the Gornergrat.

Zermatt offers some fantastic early availability in chalets such as The Zermatt Lodge, Chalet Gemini, Chalet Carmen or even the uber modern loft apartment The Heinz Julen Loft.

Tragedy in Val d’Isere

The latest news from Val d’Isere has pulled on the heart strings of many who know and love the resort and especially with certain members of the team here at Oxford Ski.

The legendary Apres ski bar and restaurant Bananas burnt down at 3.00pm on Sunday afternoon. Smoke engulfed the iconic bananas roof as firemen battled the blaze, fortunately no one was hurt although this did not stop the pain being felt by everyone in resort who’s lives have been touched by this famous Val d’Isere landmark.

Despite the tragedy, Val d’Isere was abuzz over the weekend as the first lifts and pistes opened for the season, to the envy of many other Alpine resort which are still waiting for their first snowfalls. 

We still have some fantastic chalets available to make the most of this early snowfall; the fabulous chalet La Tene is still available from the 11th December, the cosy chalet apartment Santons Isere is available from the 10th December and Chalets Nanouk and Elena are available from the 17th December.

Giant Spiders in Verbier

We’ve all noticed that winter is just around the corner; and the question everyone is afraid to ask is, what’s the snow going to be like this season?

Fear not, however! Fortunately the boys at Performance Verbier ski school have a scientifically sound snow forecast. It involves the number of berries on the trees and size of the spiders in the sink.

Verbier is inundated with giant arachnids this autumn, which if superstition and old wives tales are to believed mean (along with the berries on the trees) that the snow is going to fall and give Verbier a fantastic season.

Skis fly for free with British Airways

British Airways are offering a fantastic early booking offer for anyone wanting to fly from London City airport to the Alps. If you book before 31st October, your ski/snowboard equipment will travel for free!

This amazing offer is for flights to Geneva, Zurich and BA’s new route for the coming winter to Chambery and means that travellers will not have to use part of their 23kg baggage allowance for their equipment or risk paying an additional cost.

Between the dates of 18-22 January Polo on Ice comes to Klosters, and Chalet Maldeghem will have it’s own exclusive hospitality tent where guests can watch the game and meet the players.

Chalet Maldeghem is also using a new event manager who can organize a variety of extra services. She will greet you on arrival at the chalet, and is happy to discuss with you the varied selection of special events that can be arranged.  Some of those on offer to Maldeghem guests include dinners at the ice hotel or remote mountain inns (with a torch-led descent), off-piste skiing into Austria (day trips of up to 40 km), and late lunches in delightful mountain restaurants.
